| Description | An ancestral painting of an emperor on gold background. The sun and moon depicted on his garment form the character “ming”, naming the dynasty. The dragon motif symbolises imperial power, set in the clouds representing authority and the Mandate of Heaven. His robe shows 9 dragons, a number reserved for the Emperor alone, and the yellow colour of the robe was usually reserved for members of the royal family. |
