Item No. CHB-16
Description by Utagawa Kunisada I (Toyokuni III, 1786–1864). This richly colored kabuki actor print portrays Onoe Baikō IV (Onoe Kikugorō IV) in the female role of Chūrō Onoe, the tragic senior lady-in-waiting from the celebrated Kagamiyama theatrical tradition. Onoe appears seated in an interior, leaning forward as though overcome by distress. Kunisada contrasts the character's emotional vulnerability with the extraordinary richness of her costume: a black robe densely patterned with multicolored flowers, stripes and flowing blue designs, set against an equally decorative architectural interior. The Kagamiyama story centers on Onoe's persecution and humiliation by the malicious court lady Iwafuji. Onoe's subsequent death and the revenge undertaken by her loyal maid Ohatsu made the drama particularly celebrated for its powerful female roles. CHB-16 ( Onoe Baikō IV as Chūrō Onoe) and CHB-17 (Ichikawa Danjūrō VIII as Tsubone Iwafuji) belong together.
