Utagawa Hiroshige’s Fujikawa, Station 37 from the Hōeidō Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō (c. 1833–34), shows a refined woman traveling on horseback with an attendant beside a winding river. Soft bokashi skies and lyrical composition exemplify Hiroshige’s poetic vision of travel and landscape in Edo-period Japan.
