Item No. CHB-29
Description Japanese color woodblock print (nishiki-e) depicting a kabuki actor in a dramatic interior scene, probably one sheet from a larger multi-sheet theatrical composition. The actor kneels in an animated pose, turning sharply as he reaches behind him. His striking gray robe is decorated with large multicolored Japanese characters, while shōji screens and richly patterned architectural details establish the theatrical interior. Portions of adjoining figures or scenery at the edges indicate that the image originally continued onto neighboring sheets. Signed Toyokuni ga in the artist's red toshidama cartouche. The specific actor, role, play and exact publication date remain under investigation. Utagawa Kunisada I (Toyokuni III, 1786–1864)
