| Description | Utagawa Kunisada I (Toyokuni III, 1786–1864) Japanese color woodblock print (nishiki-e) depicting a kabuki actor portraying the female character Gokuin no Osen (極印のおせん). Osen is shown in a dramatic interior scene, gripping a drawn sword while holding a tall cylindrical lantern. Her sweeping blue patterned kimono, disordered clothing, and tense posture heighten the sense of action and theatrical suspense. The red cartouche at upper left identifies the character as Gokuin no Osen. The adjacent inscription requires further research and may provide additional information about the actor or performance. The print bears Kunisada’s Toyokuni signature within a toshidama cartouche at lower right. |
