Item No. CHB-19
Description by Utagawa Kunisada I (Toyokuni III). This dramatic kabuki actor print depicts the characters Yamakawaya Gonroku (山川屋権六) and Wakaimono Kyūsuke (わかい者九介) in a multi-level interior. Gonroku appears above, pulling aside a screen and looking downward, while Kyūsuke recoils beneath the wooden veranda with one arm raised. Kunisada uses the architecture itself to organize the action, dividing the composition horizontally between the two figures. Gonroku's subdued checked robe contrasts with Kyūsuke's striking blue-and-white costume, while the actors' opposing gestures create a strong sense of theatrical movement. An impression recorded by the Waseda University Theatre Museum confirms Kunisada's authorship, the characters Yamakawaya Gonroku and Kyūsuke, and the date 1853
