| Description | Japanese color woodblock print (nishiki-e) by Utagawa Kunisada (Toyokuni III, 1786–1864), provisionally dated to 1858. The print portrays a standing woman dressed in an exceptionally elaborate, multilayered kimono patterned with geometric fields, flowering camellias and richly contrasting blue, red and gray textiles. Her carefully arranged coiffure and ornaments, together with the exaggerated length and display of the costume, make dress and textile design central elements of the composition. |
