| Description | Mariko, from Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō Road, c. 1806, by Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849). This early nineteenth-century color woodblock print depicts Mariko, one of the post stations along the Tōkaidō, the great highway linking Edo with Kyoto. Rather than concentrating on monumental landscape, Hokusai presents the everyday experience of travel: horses and baggage gather outside a roadside inn while figures within attend to food and other necessities of the journey. |
